Gluten Intolerance
Did You Know? There are many products that contain gluten: medications, beauty products, vitamin supplements, bouillon cubes, gravy, blue cheese, hot dogs, French fries, hot chocolate and more? It is surprising that even non-food items, can contain hidden gluten. The FDA is not required to list possible gluten in labeling on medications and generic medications are more likely to contain traces of gluten. Even beauty products, like lip balms, lotions and moisturizers may contain gluten as well as many other items. Source
Are You Gluten Intolerant? Gluten intolerance can happen at any age. Gluten intolerance causes a lot of the same symptoms as celiac disease, but it's not the same condition. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to damage to the digestive tract.
Why More People Have Gluten Sensitivity: In the past 50 years experts say that wheat grain has been altered to provide crops that are more resistant to drought and bake more easily, higher use of antibiotics, cleaner environment, fad diets, and genetics. Also the majority of wheat grown in the U.S. tends to be hard red wheat which is high in protein content (mostly in the form of gluten). In Europe, the majority of wheat grown is soft wheat, lower in proteins and thus lower in gluten content. Learn more here.
Difference Between Celiac and Gluten Sensitivity: When a celiac person ingests gluten, his or her immune system will attack against its own body's tissue. Whereas, if a person is gluten intolerant, the consumption of gluten will cause more extraintestinal or non-GI symptoms, such as headache, brain fog, joint pain, and numbness in the legs, arms or fingers. Symptoms typically appear hours or days after gluten has been consumed. Unlike celiac disease, however, gluten intolerance doesn't usually cause long-term harm to the body.
What is Gluten Belly? Gluten belly, also known as wheat belly, is a common phrase that refers to stomach swelling after eating gluten because of bloating. Along with bloating, one may also develop symptoms such as stomach pain, flatulence, or irregular bowel movements.
Possible Symptoms for Gluten Sensitivity: The following are some of the symptoms for non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Bloating, diarrhea and constipation, stomach pain, headaches and migraines, fatigue, depression and anxiety, pain and inflammation of joints and muscles, and brain fog.
Test for Celiac or Gluten Sensitivity: The most frequently used test for Celiac is the tTG. (tTG-IgA). It is accurate at detecting most people with celiac disease on a gluten-containing diet. Currently, there is no test for gluten sensitivity. People with digestive symptoms that suggest celiac disease should see a gastroenterologist to determine their risk for either celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. The gastroenterologist may recommend avoiding gluten for a few weeks. If the digestive symptoms improve, you then reintroduce gluten into your diet to see if the symptoms return.
Untreated Celiac: Untreated celiac disease can lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis (MS), and many other conditions, including dermatitis, anemia, osteoporosis, infertility and miscarriage, neurological conditions like epilepsy and migraines. Celiac disease has no cure but can be managed by avoiding all sources of gluten. Once gluten is eliminated from your diet, your small intestine can begin to heal.
Untreated Gluten Sensitivity: Gluten Sensitivity over time affects your body by creating inflammation, causing digestive issues like fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea and gassiness.

Edema - Swollen Ankles, Feet and Legs
CAUSES: Swollen ankles, feet and legs are common and usually not cause for alarm. According to NHS, this condition (Edema) could be due to standing or sitting in the same position for too long; eating too much salty food; being overweight; being pregnant; or taking certain medicines – such as some blood pressure medicines, contraceptive pills, hormone therapy, antidepressants or steroids. However, this condition could also be due to problems with your kidneys, liver or heart, an injury, insect bite/sting, infection, or a blood clot.
There is a difference between edema which is a general term for acute swelling in the body and lymphedema which is a chronic and severe condition that involves significant long-term edema fluid buildup when the body is unable to restore fluid balance, and it persists for more than three months. Treatment for lymphedema is similar to the treatment of edema but best to consult with your physician.
REMEDIES: Normal edema should go away by itself but if not, you can try these remedies:
CALL DOCTOR: If the above home remedies don’t work in a few days, check with your general practitioner, since swollen feet can be a sign of heart failure, kidney failure, lymphedema, a blood clot, or an infection, such as cellulitis. If the swelling is not serious, the doctor may suggest some basic lifestyle changes like losing weight or going on a low-salt diet.
EMERGENCY: However, call 999 right away if you have shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest tightness or pain, you are coughing up blood, the swollen area is red and hot to the touch, you have a high temperature or you have diabetes. These signs could be due to fluid buildup in the lungs or a blood clot called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.
The following are different edema conditions that cause feet, ankle or leg swelling. A physician’s diagnosis is recommended to determine the kind of edema and the correct treatment required.
VARICOSE VEINS: Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged blue or dark purple veins that occur on the legs and may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: RA or another inflammatory disorder, such as cellulitis, knee bursitis or osteoarthritis, causes leg swelling due to inflamed joints or tissues, of the feet, ankles, legs, arms and hands. There is usually pain with inflammatory disorders.
AGE-RELATED EDEMA: Approximately 70% of older adults have leg edema. Vein blood vessels become less effective in pumping blood back to the lungs to get oxygenated, so the blood remains in the veins longer than needed, called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)
CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY (CVI) is a progressive disease to the veins that can cause discomfort, pain and reduced quality of life.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (PAD) Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can cause swollen lower legs, feet, and ankles because it affects the vascular system in the lower limbs. Plaque builds up in the arteries blocking blood flow.

REMEDIES: Normal edema should go away by itself but if not, you can try these remedies:
- Reduce sodium intake.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Eat grapes, beets, pineapples, and leafy vegetables.
- Increase Vitamin C foods to help fight inflammation – oranges, kiwis, strawberries, tomatoes, kale and spinach.
- Stay away from processed, refined, salted and large amounts of sugar and fats.
- Add magnesium-rich foods and supplements.
- Raise legs on pillows when possible.
- Use compression socks.
- Get some exercise.
- Manage your weight.
- Wear comfortable shoes.
- Soak feet in cool water Epsom salt bath for about 15-20 minutes.
- Dry and moisturize your feet with an anti-Inflammatory cream to avoid infections.
- Do not stand of sit for long periods of time or wear clothes, socks or shoes that are too tight.
- If swelling is due to an injury, use ice packs or baths.

VARICOSE VEINS: Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged blue or dark purple veins that occur on the legs and may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.
- Symptoms may include aching legs, swollen feet and ankles and dry skin and color changes in the lower leg. People who are overweight, older or pregnant may develop this condition.
- Seriousness: Usually varicose veins is not a serious health problem.
- Treatment Options. Varicose Vein swelling can be treated by exercising, managing weight, avoiding salt, choosing proper footwear, raising legs and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing.
- Symptoms: Stiffness in the ankle joint after a period of inactivity in the morning right after walking that lasts several hours. The ankle and foot joints may be swollen, tender, warm or red in appearance.
- Seriousness: RA swelling causes inflammation and excessive of joint fluid which can damage cartilage and soften the bone within the joint. End stage RA causes pain, swelling, stiffness and mobility loss and bones may fuse.
- Treatment: Ankle joint swelling Includes multiple medications, exercises, orthotic devices/shoe inserts, surgery and home remedies. In the early stages of RA swelling a cortisone injection (steroid) can be relieve pain.
AGE-RELATED EDEMA: Approximately 70% of older adults have leg edema. Vein blood vessels become less effective in pumping blood back to the lungs to get oxygenated, so the blood remains in the veins longer than needed, called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
- Symptoms: Swelling can occur in any part of the body but mostly in the legs of the elderly.
- Seriousness: Contact your doctor for swelling, stretched or shiny skin, or skin that holds a dimple after being pressed and immediately for shortness of breath or irregular heartbeat.
- Treatment: According to the Mayo Clinic, keep the swollen area above heart level and incorporate massage.
DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)
- Symptoms: DVT normally affects just one leg and includes unequal swelling, where one leg is larger than the other and pain or tenderness is experienced when you stand or walk. It might feel like a cramp that you can’t get rid of.
- Seriousness: Very serious. If the clot is medium size, it could cause chest pain and breathing difficulty. If it is a large clot it could cause the lungs to collapse resulting in heart failure.
- Treatment: If you have DVT, you should contact your doctor or go to the emergency room immediately. You would be prescribed an anticoagulant that prevents clots from getting bigger.
CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY (CVI) is a progressive disease to the veins that can cause discomfort, pain and reduced quality of life.
- Symptoms: Dull aching, cramping or heavy feeling in the legs, leg swelling, pain that worsens when you stand and improves when you elevate your legs, tingling sensation in the legs, and visible varicose veins.
- Seriousness: CVI is not life-threatening and it can be managed but cannot be cured.
- Treatment: Some procedures and surgeries can remove damaged veins so that blood doesn’t flow through them anymore. Your doctor can recommend lifestyle changes that may help. The following home management suggestions can help manage this condition. Avoid long periods of standing or sitting by flexing your legs every 30 minutes, check skin for ulcers, elevate legs, exercise or walk regularly, manage your weight, moisturize skin, and wear compression socks if recommended by your health provider.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (PAD) Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can cause swollen lower legs, feet, and ankles because it affects the vascular system in the lower limbs. Plaque builds up in the arteries blocking blood flow.
- Symptoms: Pain, numbness, aching, or heaviness in your legs when you walk, cramps in your feet, leg, or butt, sores or wounds on your feet or legs that don’t get better, pale or bluish-colored skin, one leg feels cooler than the other. Some people experience foot or toe pain that wakes them up, sores or color changes on their feet.
- Seriousness: PAD isn’t a medical emergency, but lack of blood flow to your legs can cause serious problems like gangrene causing tissue in your legs to die. You’ll also have a greater risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
- Treatment: Contact your doctor for diagnosis and treatment to manage the risk factors with lifestyle changes, medication and special procedures or surgeries that can drastically decrease the risk for heart attack and stroke. Home remedies include walking, quit smoking, eat a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet, control your blood pressure, manage your weight, don’t take cold medications containing pseudoephedrine and take care of your feet and nails, and if diabetic, keep your blood sugar under control.
Bee Stings
Why bees sting? They sting for defense and predation. Honey bees and bumble bees sting only for defense or if aggravated. Most bees sting only once, however, wasps and hornets can sting again. African bees (killer bees) are found in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. They are smaller than other bees and can chase people for a quarter of a mile if they get excited or aggressive. They attack as a defense but their venom is no more potent than other bees and mass stinging attacks are not common. Late summer and early fall, bees, especially yellow jackets, and wasps, become very aggressive because their life cycle is coming to an end.
How to Repel Bees: Plant bee-repelling plants like citronella, mint, and eucalyptus in your yard, and you can also use citronella candles or even dryer sheets around your patio. to ward off bees. You can also make your own natural bee repellent. Bees also dislike olive oil, vegetable oil, lemon or lime so you may choose to put those scents on your skin. There are also preventive measures that reduce the chances of having killer or other kinds of bees nesting near your home.
How to Avoid Getting Stung: To avoid getting stung, it's a good idea to wear light-colored clothing and avoid the colors black, red or dark colors which bees interpret them as natural predators, and don't use flowery perfumes, soaps, or lotions. They are most attracted to blue, purple, violet, white, and yellow flowers.
If you accidently disturb a nest, run immediately, do not swat bees. Try to get to an enclosed shelter (such as a car) or run until the bees stop following you. It may be necessary to get a quarter mile or more away from where the attack began. Cover your face with whatever is handy if you can do so without impairing your vision. Never jump into a body of water to escape bees. They could wait hours for you to surface. Bees will rarely sting you unless you provoke their hive or if you accidentally squish or step on one.

How to Treat a Bee Sting: To treat a sting from a bee, wasp, or hornet it is important to remove the stinger immediately since it decreases the amount of venom released into your skin, thereby reducing pain and the risk of severe anaphylactic reaction. Then wash with soap and water, apply a cold pack to reduce swelling (if you have additional swelling or difficulty breathing, nausea, hives or dizziness, go to the emergency room). Then take OTC pain medication. You can also neutralize a bee sting by mixing some baking soda with water and placing it on the affected area and then covering it with a bandage and leaving it on for at least 15 mins. Blood Pressure Info
The first number, called systolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The second number, called diastolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats. Third number is your pulse - beats per minute.
Normal Blood Pressure:
A normal blood pressure level is less than 120/80 mmHg. The American Heart Association (AHA) updated their guidance to indicate that people age 65 and older should ideally have a blood pressure reading lower than 130/80 mm Hg. A normal resting heart pulse rate should be between 60 to 100 beats per minute, but it can vary from minute to minute. The maximum pulse rate by age can be found on this chart.
Low Blood Pressure:
Dangerously low blood pressure called Hypotension is lower than 90/60 mm Hg. If your blood pressure gets too low, it can cause dizziness, fainting or death. Low blood pressure is not a condition that is usually treated except if it occurs in the elderly or occurs suddenly.
Dehydration can lead to high as well as low blood pressure. Low blood pressure can make you feel dizzy, weak, and tired. Severe cases of low blood pressure can lead to shock, which needs treatment in a hospital or can even lead to death. Drinking more water will help neutralize the sodium and rehydrate the cells throughout your body.
In general, however, it usually takes about two hours for your body to rehydrate fully after drinking a significant amount of water. As for how you should rehydrate, water is the best choice. Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, can be helpful for athletes who need to replenish electrolytes.
Raising Low Blood Pressure:
In addition to drinking more water, you can increase blood pressure that is lower than 90/60 mm Hg by eating salty foods, such as canned soup, smoked fish, cottage cheese, pickled items, and olives. It is also beneficial to include foods high in Vitamin B-12 and folate, such as eggs, fortified cereals, animal meats, nutritional yeast, asparagus, beans, lentils, citrus fruits, and leafy greens. Caffeinated coffee or tea may also temporarily spike blood pressure.
Some people have low blood pressure all the time, which is normal for them. However, if there is a sudden drop in blood pressure, it could be linked to a health problem.
High Blood Pressure:
Salt, or specifically the sodium in salt, is a major contributor to high blood pressure and heart disease. This is because of how it affects fluid balance in the blood. Table salt is around 40 percent sodium. Some amount of salt is important for health, but it's easy to eat too much. Reducing sodium to 1,500 milligrams a day can lower high blood pressure.
Call 911 or emergency medical services if your blood pressure is 180/120 mm Hg or greater and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or symptoms of stroke. Stroke symptoms include numbness or tingling, trouble speaking, or changes in vision.
Lowering High Blood Pressure:
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are 10 ways to control high blood pressure without medicine. One excellent way is to include aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing, in your daily routine. There are treatments that can lower high blood pressure as noted by the Mayo Clinic.
If you have high blood pressure, reducing sodium to about 1,500 milligrams a day is the minimum daily requirement. The upper limit, 2,300 mg, is equal to only about 1 teaspoon of salt.
Cutting out sugar can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol level. High sugar intake raises insulin levels, which in turn activates the sympathetic nervous system. This leads to an increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
Nutrition-wise, adding beets or beet juice can lower your high blood pressure. Beetroot juice takes 2-3 hours to work and may have an impact after 24 hours, according to 2015 research. During that period, beet juice improves blood circulation, reduces high pressure, improves digestive tracts, and detoxifies the body.
Besides drinking beet juice, there are 5 more drinks that could lower blood pressure.

Disinfecting Wipes and Hand Sanitizers
Are disinfecting wipes safe to use? According to poison.org, disinfecting wipes are intended to be used by hand and because of this, they are relatively safe when used properly. When simply wiping down a surface, a baby wipe will often accomplish the same cleaning goal and does not contain additional chemicals. If there was raw food on the countertop or if someone in the household has a weakened immune system, then the use of disinfecting wipes is more reasonable.
Ingredients in Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
What the the most harmful chemical in disinfecting wipes? Most disinfecting wipes contain bleach or chemicals called Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, or Quats for short. Quats are antimicrobial chemicals that kill germs, but also present health risks like asthma and asthma attacks, allergic reactions, hormone-disruption and general skin and eye irritation. Bleach, while effective at killing germs – can trigger asthma and allergies in people who have never had them before, as well as trigger dangerous symptoms in people who already have them. There’s a reason why using bleach comes with so many warnings: wear gloves, use only in well-ventilated areas, wash your hands and rinse after usage. Bleach can irritate your skin and airways. And if you have sensitive skin, disinfecting wipes can also lead to contact dermatitis.
How can you disinfect without using disinfecting wipes? Rubbing Alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol, is available at drugstores and serves as a quick-and-easy alternative to disinfecting wipes. Look for the kind over “70%” (CDC recommendations) to ensure effective disinfecting. It’s a powerful germicide, which means it has the ability to kill a wide variety of germs, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Rubbing alcohol is used in healthcare settings to disinfect hands and surfaces, but can also be used as a household cleaner. In concentrations of 70 percent or higher, isopropanol has the ability to kill the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Should you wash your hands after using disinfecting wipes? Disinfecting wipes contain chemicals that kill bacteria and viruses, which, according to the EPA, classifies them as a pesticide. Therefore, after using, be sure to throw it away in a trash can and wash your hands with soap and water.
Do disinfecting wipes have an expiration date? Most disinfectant wipes are good for about two years, however, the exception is if it contains antibacterial, then the shelf life is about one year.
How long does it take for a disinfecting wipe or hand sanitizer to kill viruses? Clorox wipes instructs to use enough wipes for treated surface to remain visibly wet for 4 minutes. To kill viruses, let stand 15 seconds. For hand sanitizers, cover all surface and rub hands together until they feel dry – approx. 20 seconds.
How to use a Baby Wipe as a disinfectant: Baby Wipes are for cleaning and are not antibacterial or a disinfectant. However, by adding rubbing alcohol to your baby wipes, you can, however, turn them into effective sanitizing wipes. To do this, pour ½ bottle of rubbing alcohol — it should be at least 70 percent Isopropyl alcohol to achieve the best, safest, and most effective results — into a container of baby wipes.
